A Students guide on where to live in Lancaster!

AsherGeneral Student Living

We know that Lancaster may not be the biggest city, but considering it is home to two Universities, there are definitely parts of central Lancaster that are seen as ‘student areas’. When you’re moving into off-campus student accommodation, picking which part of the city to live in can be a deal breaker for some groups. At Escape Campus, we understand location is key, so we’ve put together a guide to all the student areas in Lancaster.

When picking where to live next academic year, there are a few things you need to consider, is it close to Lancaster centre? Close to a bus stop? Near all the shops?

Town Centre

The town centre is undoubtedly one of the most popular parts of Lancaster for students! Properties on Church Street, Cheapside and George Street are as close to the action as you could possibly get. With a 2-minute walk to the bus station, close to all the shops and near plenty of takeaways and pubs, town centre is ideal for those of you who love to be within walking distance of everything you may need.

Fairfield

Whilst the Fairfield area may be slightly further out of the town centre, it is still one of our more popular student areas! Houses on Dallas Road, Blades Street and Westbourne Road are located within the Fairfield area and it’s a bustling community with plenty of students. The great thing about Fairfield is that you’re extremely close to Lancaster town centre, without being right in the middle of it, which means you’re only a short walking distance to all of the town amenities. This area is also really close to Lancaster train station, which is great for those of you who may be traveling back home often.

Greaves

If you’re wanting your Lancaster student accommodation to be a short walk away from the town centre, bus stops, pubs and shops then Greaves is the perfect area for you! Escape Campus have a few houses located in the Greaves area, such as houses on Railway Street, Brunton Road, Bridge Road and of course Greaves Road. Located at the top of town, close by to the hospital and the University of Cumbria, it’s the perfect spot for all university students.

Bowerham

Bowerham is a great area for those of you wanting a student home in a more residential and built-up area of Lancaster. Though there’s still plenty of students living in this area (with student houses on Bowerham Road, Coulston Road, Rosebery Avenue and Havelock Street to name a few), it doesn’t feel like you’re in a student city! Bowerham is a lovely part of Lancaster situated close by to the University of Cumbria and with plenty of bus stops for those of you at Lancaster Uni! It’s also only a 10-15 min walk into Lancaster town centre, or a short bus journey. Perfect for students, Bowerham has plenty of shops, a few pubs, a great selection of takeaways and isn’t within the hustle and bustle of Lancaster town centre! Bowerham is always a popular choice with our Lancaster students.

Primrose

Primrose is again another extremely popular area for our Lancaster students. Within a short walk of both Bowerham and Greaves, Primrose is always a firm favourite with students and you’re sure to have a good few other student houses along your street if you choose to live here (Dale Street, Prospect Street, Clarence Street, Hope Street and Langley Road). Like the other areas, Primrose is a short walk to Lancaster centre, near plenty of bus stops for those of you at Lancaster Uni, within walking distance to Uni of Cumbria and has plenty of shops nearby. One of the best parts of living on Primrose means you’re close to Hodgsons Chippy, one of Lancaster’s most popular takeaways. And for good reason too- it’s won the UK’s Fish and Chip Shop of the year!

If you’re wanting to live a little further from the hustle and bustle of the centre, areas such as Scotforth, Bulk, Ridge and Newton and Skerton and Riverside are definitely worth looking at, and more information on all of these areas and how they’re best suited to our Lancaster students can be found on the Escape Campus website.
