Dealing with Being Homesick at University: Tips for Lancaster Students!

AsherGeneral Student Living

Moving away from home for university is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel daunting. For many students, homesickness can come as a surprise, especially during the first few months and throughout the winter. If you’re studying in Lancaster and feeling a little overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Homesickness is very common, and it doesn’t mean you’ve made the wrong choice.

Here at Escape Campus, we’ve put together some practical tips to help you manage homesickness and feel more settled, both in Lancaster and in your student home.

You’re Not Alone

Feeling homesick is completely normal and something many students experience. Missing home doesn’t mean you’re not enjoying university or that you’ve made a mistake. You’re adjusting to a new place, new routines, new independence and academic pressures, all at the same time.

Acknowledging how you feel is an important first step. Be kind to yourself and allow time to adjust. If things feel overwhelming, talk to someone you trust, whether that’s a friend, a coursemate or one of your housemates. Support is also available through Lancaster University if you’re struggling with your mental health.

Make Your Lancaster Student Accommodation Feel Like Home

Your living space plays a big role in how comfortable and settled you feel. Whether you live on campus or in Lancaster city centre, making your room feel familiar can really help.

Bring framed photos, favourite bedding, cosy blankets, candles or small plants to personalise your space. Creating a comfortable environment can make a big difference and help ease feelings of homesickness, especially during quieter moments.

Staying Connected

Staying in touch with friends and family back home can be incredibly reassuring, particularly during your first term. Regular calls or messages can help you feel supported, but it’s also important to strike a balance.

Try to stay connected while still giving yourself space to experience university life and explore Lancaster. Finding that balance can take time, so don’t worry if it doesn’t come naturally straight away.

Get Involved in Lancaster Life

One of the best ways to feel more settled is to get involved in what Lancaster and the university have to offer. Keeping busy and building new routines can help reduce feelings of homesickness.

Joining a society, sports club or course related group is a great way to meet people and get out of your student home. Lancaster might be a small city, but there’s plenty to explore. Take a walk around Lancaster Castle, stroll along the River Lune or hop on a bus to Morecambe for some fresh air by the sea. The more familiar the city becomes, the more at home you’ll start to feel.

Give It Time

Settling into university life takes time. Some students feel at home straight away, while for others it can take weeks or even months. There’s no right or wrong pace.

Lean on your housemates and build a support system around you. As time passes and routines develop, Lancaster and your student home will start to feel more familiar and comfortable.
