Earth Day this year falls on April 22nd, and the theme is ‘our power, our planet’. Earth Day promotes becoming climate aware and protecting your planet and has been celebrated every year for over 50 years. Every single person can do their bit to help the cause and help our planet, and here are some tips we’ve put together to be a little greener and a little kinder to the Earth.
Why should we be Eco-friendly?
It’s easy to say we should all be doing small things daily to be eco-friendly, but the real question is why? Making a few small changes to your lifestyle can not only help the environment and our health, but it also helps the planet reduce waste, protects wildlife and slows down the rate and effects of climate change. We’ve put together some little changes that all of our Lancaster students can do in their daily lives that should help you be a little more eco-friendly.

Transport
Like most Lancaster students living in off-campus town centre student accommodation, being close to a bus stop is key to getting to university. For those of you who drive to Uni, why not try getting the bus, or cycling up to campus now the weather is improving! If you must drive, you could car share with your housemates and give everyone a lift in. That way you can reduce your carbon footprint and get in your housemates good books!
In and around your Lancaster student accommodation
Being eco-friendly doesn’t mean you need to spend lots of money and time doing new things. Something as simple as cooking as a household can not only save energy but also reduce food waste! If you want some easy student recipes, visit our blog page here.
Making sure you’re recycling as effectively as you can! Remember to pop your bins out on bin day (everything you need to know about bin dates can be found on your Arthur app) and make the most of using all the space in the recycling boxes. We know that when living in student accommodation, especially as a large group, rubbish can build up, so try and be a little greener this year and boost your recycling game.
We’ve all been in a rush and left things turned on or plugged in, but small changes like remembering to turn off the lights can help reduce energy waste. Also doing a wash on a lower temperature, washing your clothes on 30 degrees and making sure it’s a full load is an easy way to be more eco-friendly.
Events happening in Lancaster
Lancaster University’s Green Campus has received the Green Flag award for the thirteenth year in a row! They have initiatives running to plant trees, track local wildlife and explore the park life!
Lancashire Leap brings the community together to combat climate change! They host lots of events for anyone to attend, from recycled fashion shows, workshops to art exhibitions and green weeks!
We hope you enjoy Earth Day this year, and whatever small changes you are able to make are sure to help the planet!
