International Museum Day on May 18th was the perfect reminder of how many incredible museums Lancaster has to offer. Luckily for our Lancaster students, you can explore them all year round, so why not plan a visit before your time at Uni comes to an end? Lancaster is a city rich in history, and if you’ve never explored any of the museums in and around it, International Museum Day is the perfect reminder and opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture.
City Museum
Right in the heart of the city centre, the City Museum is located on Market Square in the former town hall. Just a short journey from most of our off-campus Lancaster student accommodation, this museum is a great place for those of you who are wanting to learn more about the history of Lancaster before finishing uni.
The City Museum features a variety of exhibits and stories that showcase Lancaster’s rich heritage and its people. To learn more about the museum and its opening times, click here.

Maritime Museum
Located on the historic St George’s Quay, the Maritime Museum highlights Lancaster and Morecambe’s deep connection with local waterways. It offers a fascinating insight into the Port of Lancaster and its past, making it a must-visit whilst you’re a student living in the city.
St George’s Quay is just a short walk from the bus station, so if you’re living in student accommodation in Lancaster town centre, it’s practically on your doorstep.
Explore the old buildings from Lancaster’s days as an active port, step into a packed canal boat to hear stories from local fishermen and learn about life on the water. There’s sure to be something at the Maritime Museum that piques your interest.
Lancaster Castle
Lancaster Castle is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Step inside to see history come to life! From crime and punishment to religious and cultural beliefs, the castle offers a gripping insight into Lancaster’s dark past.
Once a functioning prison, Lancaster Castle now offers guided tours and is just a short distance from many of our town-centre student homes. You might even be able to spot the iconic castle and its stunning surroundings from your window!
While you’re there, consider visiting the Cottage Museum, located nearby on Castle Hill. Open every Saturday during the summer, this charming spot offers a glimpse into life in 1739. Entry is just £2- perfect for Lancaster students on a budget!
We hope you enjoy learning about Lancaster’s rich history and somewhat dark past! Looking for more free things to do in Lancaster this summer while the weather’s nice? Check out our latest blog post here.
