Making time for exercise as a busy student!

AsherGeneral Student Living

As Lancaster students, especially those of you in your third year, life can get busy very quickly. Between keeping up with university work, socialising, self-care, and perhaps juggling part-time jobs, it’s easy to let exercise fall to the bottom of your priority list. But just as rest is essential for recharging, so is making time for regular exercise. It’s not just about physical health; it’s a powerful tool for boosting your mental well-being too. So here at Escape Campus, we’ve put together some tips on making exercise a priority.

Planning and scheduling your workouts

Think of your workouts like any other commitment, such as assignments or lectures. Scheduling them in advance helps you stay accountable. At the beginning of each week, review your timetable and identify gaps where you can fit in exercise.

Even if you don’t head to the gym, small changes can have a big impact. For example, walk to Lancaster city centre for your shopping instead of taking the bus, or walk to campus instead of driving. These seemingly minor adjustments can add up to a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Make the most of university gyms

Lancaster students are fortunate to have access to on-campus gyms at both Lancaster University and the University of Cumbria, with subsidised memberships available. These gyms are perfect for squeezing in a workout after a lecture or a library session. They’re convenient, affordable, and an excellent option for students on a budget.

Explore Lancaster’s outdoor spots

If you’re attending classes online or prefer saving money, Lancaster offers plenty of outdoor spaces for exercise. Students living off-campus are especially close to some great spots, including:

  • Lancaster Canal: Go for a peaceful run or walk along the scenic waterways.
  • Williamson Park: Enjoy a stroll or jog through this beautiful park with stunning views and greenery.
  • Morecambe Promenade: Take a short bus ride to Morecambe and jog along the seaside.

For something more structured, check out the weekly Parkrun at Williamson Park. This free 5K event happens every Saturday at 9am. You can run, jog, walk, or even volunteer. It’s a great way to stay active and connect with the community. Just remember to register online beforehand!

Exercise for mental health

Supporting your mental health is just as important as your physical health, especially during the darker winter months. Exercise is a proven mood booster, releasing endorphins that can help combat stress and anxiety. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga session, or an hour at the gym, find what works for you and make it part of your routine.

Balancing the demands of university life is no easy task, but carving out time for exercise is an investment in yourself. It doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming, after all, small steps can lead to big changes! So, plan ahead, explore your options, and prioritise your health. Your body and mind will thank you for it!
