Take a Trip to Williamson Park

AsherLancaster Student Life

By now, most university students should have lived in Lancaster for at least one year. But you’d be surprised by how few know that Williamson Park is right on their doorstep.  It’s one of Lancaster’s most popular spots and is absolutely worth a visit! Whether you’re visiting alone or bringing your housemates along, Williamson Park is sure to be a hit for everyone. There are play areas, cafés, shops, animal attractions and stunning walks. The park is home to the iconic Ashton Memorial as well as a stunning 54 acres of parkland and woodland walks, with views over Morecambe Bay, Fylde Coast, and the Lake District.

If you’re living in off-campus accommodation in Lancaster city centre, you should find that it’s only a short journey up to Williamson Park, either by foot or by jumping on the bus.

Indulge in some Lancaster local treats

The Pavilion Café and shop are popular amongst Lancaster locals and serve a wide selection of foods. Whether you’re looking for a spot of breakfast, lunch or a snack, you can expect only the best local produce. Enjoy homemade soups, fresh salads, cakes and more! Serving both vegan and vegetarian food, there should be something at the Pavilion Café to suit everyone’s tastes. They also stock the award-winning Atkinson’s coffee, perfect for all the coffee lovers out there, especially if you get a coffee to-go to take along with you on one of the beautiful woodland walks.

Check out the Lancaster wildlife

Williamson Park is home to a wide variety of different animals and experiences. There’s the Mini Zoo which is home to meerkats and marmosets, the Mini Beasts exhibit full of creepy crawlies and the famous Butterfly House. Now, as students living in Lancaster, we understand that you may be looking for days out/experiences that don’t break the bank, luckily you can enjoy all of these animal encounters at Williamson Park cost £1-£5 per person!

The butterfly house is a rainforest for butterflies, Koi carp, tortoises and many more. Come rain or shine the butterfly house is open and always warm thanks to the humid environments hosting waterfalls, tropical plants, trees and winding vines. Walk through the rainforest alongside some of the most beautiful butterfly species and caterpillars whilst learning all about their diet and lifecycle from the information boards.

Whether you’re an animal lover or just fancy a trip out, Williamson Park’s animal exhibits make the perfect excuse to leave your Lancaster student house and spend a lovely day up at Williamson Park.

Experience the iconic Ashton Memorial:

If you’re currently living in Lancaster town centre in an off-campus student home, you’re almost guaranteed to able to see the Ashton Memorial from at least one of your windows. The iconic building was made by Lord Ashton as a tribute to his wife and has been standing since 1909. At just over 150 ft tall the memorial towers above the city of Lancaster and can be seen from most places in the centre and surrounding areas. When visiting Williamson Park, attempting to climb all the steps to reach the memorial is part of the fun, and you’re rewarded once you’ve managed it with stunning views. Looking out over the surrounding countryside, coast and Lake District fells, it’s the perfect place for a selfie to remember your time in Lancaster!
