What to pack when moving into your student accommodation!

AsherLancaster Student Life

Moving into your new student accommodation is a very exciting time. Whether it’s you’re first time living in off-campus accommodation in Lancaster town centre, or you’re a seasoned pro, packing and remembering everything you need can be stressful. Here at Escape Campus, we’ve put together a handy guide of what you might need to bring, to make your student accommodation feel like your home away from home!

Welcome to your new student home

When getting things ready to move to Uni, please remember that whilst you are moving into an off-campus house/flat your bedroom will only be so big. This means you don’t need to pack everything you can get your hands on, but just take what you will need and use. The same applies to the rest of the house! Yes, you do have the whole house to yourselves, however, this space is going to be shared with your housemates, and you’d be surprised at how fast it can build up.

What do I need for my student kitchen?

Before you buy anything, it’s worth checking with your housemates to see which items they are bringing so it saves you from ending up with 6 kettles! Of course, some people may not be willing to share crockery, so this is something you might wish to discuss as a group before moving in day. If anything is forgotten, don’t worry, one of the perks of living in off-campus accommodation in Lancaster town centre means that there are plenty of shops nearby to buy any last-minute items from.

Some items that you will need are:

  • Plate/bowls and cutlery
  • Glasses and mugs
  • Basic food to last you a couple of days whilst getting settled
  • Washing up liquid
  • Tea towels and dishcloths
  • Basic cleaning supplies

What to pack for your uni bedroom

Your bedroom is your personal space, so it should be a place where you feel relaxed and comfortable, it’s likely to be the room you’ll spend most of your time in, so getting it right is important. Some essential items include:

  • Bedding
  • Pillows
  • Duvet sets
  • Blankets
  • PJs
  • Bedside lamp
  • Small personal touches.

Looking to make your bedroom feel more like home? Adding a few personal touches can do a world of wonders and it doesn’t have to be anything grand. Sometimes a few houseplants, books or pictures of loved ones can make the biggest difference.

Bathroom essentials for your student accommodation

Depending on your new student home, you’ll either be sharing a couple of bathrooms with your housemates or if you’re really lucky you may have an ensuite! Bathroom items are essential to make your stay as comfortable as possible, these include:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Wash Cloth
  • Towels
  • Toilet Roll
  • Shampoo/conditioner/body wash
  • First aid kit

For items such as a bathmat, toilet brush and bathroom cleaning supplies this again may be something you wish to discuss with your housemates to ensure no multiples are brought.

Don’t forget your university supplies!

Of course, as students, it’s vital not to forget everything you’ll need for completing your university course! Whilst some of you may work well in the library, others may work better off-campus in their room, so making sure you’ve got everything you need around you is key:

  • Laptop/computer
  • Phone/laptop charger
  • Stationary
  • Books needed for your course
  • Calendar
  • Anything personal to you that helps you study!

Whilst this is only a short list of essential items to bring with you, we’re sure that when it’s time to move in that you’ll be bringing much more with you. The student room has put together a more extensive list of things you may need if you wish to check that out.

Good luck moving in, and we hope you are very happy in your new student homes!
