What’s Going On in Lancaster This Winter: A Student’s Guide!

AsherLancaster Student Life

Spending winter in Lancaster can be genuinely lovely. The cobbled streets, the Christmas lights and the cosy cafes all make the city feel extra special at this time of year. To help you make the most of the festive season, we’ve pulled together a simple guide to the best winter activities for Lancaster students.

Lancaster On Ice

One of the city’s most popular festive events is Lancaster On Ice in Dalton Square. Running from the 21st of November until early January 2026, it is a must-visit. The square turns into a full winter wonderland with an ice rink, the well loved tipi bar, Christmas market stalls and the big Ferris Wheel. If you’re in Lancaster student accommodation in the town centre, you might even be able to see some of the lights from home. It is one of the easiest ways to get into the festive spirit.

Warm Up in Lancaster’s Cafes

If the winter weather gets a bit too cold, Lancaster’s cafes are perfect for a hot drink and a breather. Student favourites like Journey Social, 18a and Atkinsons are ideal for catching up on uni work, meeting friends or just relaxing for an hour. If you’re living off campus in Lancaster centre, you are always only a short walk from somewhere cosy to warm up.

Take a Christmas Walk

Winter walks can be one of the best ways to enjoy the season. Williamson Park is one of Lancaster’s most iconic spots and looks brilliant in winter. With beautiful views over the city and across to the Lake District, it is popular with both locals and students. If your student accommodation is in Bowerham or Scotforth, it’s only a short walk up to Willaimson Park. Top tip: wrap up warm and take a hot drink.

Have a Christmas Movie Night

Some of the best winter evenings happen at home. Whether you want a Christmas movie marathon with your housemates or just a quiet night watching your favourite festive films, it is easy to make your Lancaster student accommodation feel like a cosy winter hideaway. Grab a blanket, make a hot drink and settle in for a night of relaxing festive fun.

Lancaster is a great place to be in winter, and there is plenty happening across the city to keep you busy. Whether you are staying in and getting cosy or heading out into the city centre to explore, we hope you enjoy the festive season and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year from the Escape Campus team.
