The Best Vegetarian and Vegan spots in Lancaster

AsherLancaster Student Life

Lancaster may only be a small city, but it’s home to a nice variety of vegetarian and vegan restaurants and cafes. Whether you want to become vegetarian, transition to becoming vegan, or just consume less meat and dairy, here’s our guide to the best places in Lancaster to grab a bite to eat. Many believe there are many benefits to eating a veggie or vegan diet, not just for yourself but also for the environment. To find out more, click here.

The Herbarium

The Herbarium is one of Lancaster’s most popular and well-known vegan eateries. Located right in the town centre, within walking distance from your Lancaster student accommodation, the Herbarium is well worth a visit both during the day and in the evening. Open as a café during the day, you can try a wide variety of foods and drinks from their brunch menu. In the evening, it transforms into ‘Herb After Dark’ running Wednesday-Saturday, serving a selection of fantastic food from plant-based burgers to Nachos and curries!

Whale Tail Café

Whale Tail Café is very popular in Lancaster amongst the locals, however, if you’re not from around here can be quite tricky to find! Serving a range of vegan and vegetarian foods, Whale Tail is located off one of the main streets in the centre of Lancaster (Penny Street) and for those of you living in the town centre, should only be a few minutes’ walk away from your student accommodation. A great thing about Whale Tale is that you can enjoy your food inside the cosy café or, in the nicer weather, in the secluded patio area. Whale Tail Café has excellent reviews and lovely staff, it’s also reasonably priced, which is perfect for the students living in Lancaster on a budget.

Pure Vegan

Pure Vegan is another fully vegan café located at the top of town. It serves a range of freshly baked cakes, tea, coffee, and vegan meals. You can check out their Facebook page to find out what sweet treats and meals they prepare daily. Previously, Pure Vegan was a market stall at Lancaster Outdoor Market, this small business has built up its popularity and is now a cosy café definitely worth the visit. For those of you living in off-campus student accommodation, this may be the perfect café for you, as it’s close to town but not located right in the hustle and bustle of the town centre.

Journey Social

Now, Journey Social is the only recommendation on here that isn’t a fully veggie or vegan café… But they do have a wide range of tasty vegan and veggie options on offer, so we thought it was worth an honourable mention. Open seven days a week and located on New Street right in the centre of Lancaster, trust us, Journey Social is worth a visit!

Home Cooking

Now we know this blog is about different vegetarian and vegan cafes in the town centre, but we also realise that as students living in Lancaster, eating out isn’t always within the budget! You can prepare and try different meat and dairy-free meals within the comfort of your student accommodation (you can even cook for our housemates, too!) without breaking the bank. You can find a range of budget-friendly meals here, or to see a wider range of student-friendly vegan and veggie recipes, click here.
